An NZeTA lets you enter as a visitor. The conditions that come with a visitor stay are what decide whether you may work or study, and those conditions are narrow.
You cannot work
Immigration New Zealand states it plainly for visitors: you cannot work. This holds even if the work is short, unpaid, or for an employer outside New Zealand paying you overseas. If earning is part of why you are going, you need a work visa, not an NZeTA.
You can study for up to 3 months
Short courses are allowed. The limit is 3 months of study in a 12-month period. A longer course needs a student visa, and enrolling first does not change that.
Where travellers get caught out
- Attending a conference is usually fine; being paid to speak at it is not.
- Volunteering can still count as work if it displaces a paid role.
- Remote work for an overseas employer is not automatically safe — check before you assume.
If you are unsure whether what you plan to do counts as work, ask Immigration New Zealand before you travel. Being turned around at the border costs far more than the question.

What is the NZeTA

Validity
An NZeTA lasts 2 years from the date it is issued, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first — and allows multiple entries.
